Formation Glossary
CB Outside coverage defender. Mirrors wide receivers and contests sideline throws.
FS Deep safety. Caps explosives, patrols space, and cleans up coverage.
SS Hybrid safety. Supports the run, matches tight ends, and works underneath.
CB Coverage corner. Carries vertical routes and squeezes throwing windows.
L EDGE Outside rusher. Sets the edge and bends the pocket from the perimeter.
DE Front defender. Attacks tackle/guard gaps with power and length.
IDL Interior trench body. Controls gaps and creates pressure through the middle.
LB Second-level defender. Fits the run and covers backs, tight ends, and zones.
R EDGE Outside rusher. Wins around the corner and keeps runs from spilling wide.

X WR Boundary receiver, often on the line. Beats press and wins isolated routes.
Y WR Slot receiver. Works spacing, option routes, and middle-field answers.
QB Primary distributor. Sets the offense, reads coverage, and drives decisions.
TE Hybrid blocker/receiver. Stresses linebackers and creates formation flexibility.
Z WR Flanker, usually off the line. Uses motion and free releases to attack leverage.
RB Backfield runner/receiver. Handles carries, protection, and outlet targets.
OL Five-man protection unit. Creates run lanes and protects the quarterback.
